"There is an educational component, and then there is fun, too," Schwartz said.

The festivities were scheduled to kick off last night with a party at Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, the anchor of National Harbor, but the event was canceled because of low ticket sales. Despite this, Schwartz said sales for the festival have been brisk, and officials expect as many as 10,000 people over the two-day event.

Schwartz said she expects an eclectic group of people to attend the festival. "Because of our educational component, I think, we will get people who know about food and wine and also beginners," she said.

Whether the event would take place was in question this year after developer Milton V. Peterson and state lawmakers squabbled over liquor licenses for the development.

But the organizers of the festival joined with a local nonprofit, the Erikka A. Hayes Foundation, to get a temporary license from the county liquor board for the event.

The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow. General admission tickets are $65 per person, which includes 10 food- and 10 alcohol-tasting vouchers; $100 for two days. Nonalcoholic tasting vouchers are $50.
