News that avoided the radar: Bret Boone, who had been trying to make a comeback at age 39, decided at the end of April to retire. In 13 games with Class AAA Columbus, he hit .261. . . . 1B Nick Johnson, who learned Thursday that he will miss an estimated four to six weeks with a tendon injury in his right wrist, said yesterday he must wear a hard brace for two weeks. After that, doctors will reevaluate his injury.
