BALTIMORE, May 16 -- Third baseman Melvin Mora and catcher Ramón Hernández both returned to the Baltimore Orioles' lineup Friday night after being sidelined with minor injuries.
Hernández had not played since May 9 at Kansas City because of soreness in his left wrist, while Mora missed the previous two games after receiving his second cortisone shot of the season for pain in his right shoulder.
Mora was cleared after taking infield before the game and proved his health on the field and in the batter's box. The veteran first showed good range to snuff out a would-be hit by Cristian Guzmán to start the fifth inning, going to his right into foul territory and reaching across his body to snag the grounder, then showing no ill effects on the long throw to get the Nationals' shortstop at first.
"When I jump into the field, I'm not thinking about pain," Mora said. "I just go there and try to make plays. I'm just glad I made that play because I know when Cristian Guzmán, a fast runner, is on the base anything can happen."
Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Mora provided the game-winning hit, following a Brian Roberts triple with an RBI double to center field.
"I thought Mora played a heck of a ballgame tonight, at the plate, making a big play in the field," Orioles Manager Dave Trembley said.
After the game, Mora said he was sore but that he would play today.
Hernández was cleared to play after experiencing no pain in his wrist during batting practice and singled in his first at-bat.Scott Hits Another HR
Left fielder Luke Scott hit his second home run in three games last night, crushing a Shawn Hill fastball 385 feet to right-center field to tie the game at 3 in the fourth. Before Tuesday, Scott had not had an extra-base hit since April 18.
