PHILADELPHIA, May 16 -- Jayson Werth homered in his first three at-bats and tied a Philadelphia Phillies record with eight RBI in a 10-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.

With a chance to tie the major league record of four home runs in a game, Werth fouled out to first base to end the seventh.

Werth tagged David Purcey for a three-run homer to right in the second inning and followed with a 425-foot grand slam to right off Purcey in the third. He added a solo shot to left-center in the fifth off Jesse Litsch to make it 9-2.

Werth became the 18th Phillies player to hit three homers in a game, and tied a franchise record for RBI held by four others, most recently Mike Schmidt in a 10-inning game at Chicago on April 17, 1976.
