One man was killed and two other people were wounded early yesterday in a shooting in the Brookland/Michigan Park area of Northeast.

The shootings occurred about 2:25 a.m. The victims were in a vehicle near 10th and Perry streets NE in the 5th Police District, where a spate of killings last month prompted stepped-up police patrols. One resident said he saw officers half a block from the scene of the shooting minutes before the gunfire.

Neighbors told of hearing as many as a dozen shots. Asked whether he heard the shooting, one replied, "How could I not?"

The man killed was identified as Clifton N. Chaney, 26, of the 1400 block of Florida Avenue NE. Police said he was hit in the head and body. The other two occupants of the car suffered wounds that police said were not life threatening.

According to police, a preliminary investigation indicated that the victims had just left a restaurant. A man with a gun approached their vehicle and began shooting, police said.

The gunman ran, and one victim drove the others to a hospital.
