II TRILL

Bun B

Bun B and Pimp C of the hard-core Texas rap duo UGK had been grinding for years before tasting mainstream success, first with Jay-Z on "Big Pimpin'," then eight years later with "Int'l Players Anthem." Before and in between those bookends, they did a whole lot of living, never sacrificing their core audience. The accidental 2007 death of Pimp C from a lethal combination of sleep apnea and prescription cough medicine didn't light a fire underneath Bun B more than it sparked a wider discussion about personal responsibility.

One of the most charismatic and authoritative voices in hip-hop, Bun B covers a spectrum of emotions and topics on "II Trill," ranging from the velvet rope mood adjuster "I Luv That" to the riding anthems "Underground Thang" and "Swang on 'Em." He gets political on "Get Cha Issue" and "If It Was up II Me." "You're Everything" is slow-cooked goodness stacked with Rick Ross, David Banner, 8Ball and MJG.

It makes sense that many UGK fans will listen to "II Trill" just to hear how Bun B addresses tragedy. While "Pop It 4 Pimp" raises a bedazzled G-string for his fallen partner, "Angel in the Sky" is a concise homage to Pimp C. The album could have been a maudlin affair. Instead, Bun B stays the course and concocts a new batch of inspirational anthems for the streets and beyond. Isn't that how Pimp C would have wanted it?
