PHILADELPHIA, May 19 -- Four Philadelphia police officers were fired Monday, with another demoted and three others facing suspension, for taking part in the videotaped beatings of three suspects.

The officers were among 19 policemen who were filmed by a local television news helicopter on May 5 kicking and pummeling three men. Police allege that the three had been involved in an earlier drive-by shooting that resulted in several injuries.

The swift disciplinary actions were announced by Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey and Mayor Michael A. Nutter (D). Ramsey said the investigation determined that the remaining 10 officers identified in the video acted within guidelines and will not face disciplinary action.
