Barkley Pays Casino Debt, but Lawsuit Remains

Former NBA star Charles Barkley has retired his debt to a Las Vegas Strip casino that sued him after he failed to pay $400,000 in gambling loans.
But the civil lawsuit remains open, and it's going to cost Barkley $40,000 more to get out of the legal doghouse.
"We received a check this afternoon from Mr. Barkley, and it's been sent to the district attorney," said Jennifer Dunne, spokeswoman for Wynn Las Vegas. The resort filed a civil complaint May 14 in state court alleging Barkley failed to repay four $100,000 casino markers, or loans, received in October.
"We've been paid in full," Dunne said. "The rest is the district attorney fee."
Clark County District Attorney David Roger said the case will remain open, with Barkley facing possible criminal prosecution, until he pays a 10 percent processing fee.
"We've been in contact with his representative," Roger told the Associated Press. "We expect a check for $40,000 within the next few days."
Barkley, a TNT basketball analyst, said during a pregame show Monday that he was to blame for the outstanding gambling debt.
"For right now, the next year or two, I'm not going to gamble," he said. . . .
Sophia Young scored 25 points and Becky Hammon added 14 as the Silver Stars beat the defending champion Phoenix Mercury, 81-76, in San Antonio.
Cappie Pondexter led the Mercury (0-2) with 23 points, and Diana Taurasi had 20.
Erin Buescher scored 13 points, Helen Darling added 12 and Ruth Riley had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Silver Stars (1-1). . . .
Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird and Swin Cash each scored 17 points to help the Storm rally for a 74-62 victory over the Sacramento Monarchs in Seattle. Sheryl Swoopes, 37, started the second-half rally and finished with 10 points for her first substantial contribution for the Storm.
