Rupee Hits Record Low Against Dollar
Pakistan's currency hit a new low against the dollar, sliding to 70 to the dollar in interbank trading before recovering to close at 69.7, as concern mounts about the country's economic problems and its government's ability to tackle them.
The rupee is under immediate pressure from the price of crude oil, which rose above $130 a barrel in Asia and has roughly doubled in the past year.
Oil companies have been buying more dollars to pay off their imports and to cover year-end bills for imports and shareholder dividends.
