Two firefighters were injured today while battling a slow, smoldering blaze inside a Washington home's basement, D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Alan Etter said.

One firefighter received an eye injury, and another hurt his leg. They were treated for the injuries that were not life-threatening, and the fire, which broke out about 10:30 a.m., was contained before it harmed the rest of the home in the unit block of Victor Street in Northeast Washington, Etter said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, as are the circumstances that led to the firefighters' injuries.
