U.S. SENATE RACE

Warner Has Raised $8 Million

Former governor Mark R. Warner (D) has raised almost $8 million for his U.S. Senate campaign and has $5.3 million in the bank, according to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission yesterday.

Warner, who has raised $1.5 million since April 1, has about a $5 million cash-on-hand advantage over his likely GOP rival in the fall, former governor James S. Gilmore III.

Gilmore, who said he will be competitive in November, has about $200,000 in the bank, including $50,000 he lent his campaign this month, according to the FEC.

PRINCE WILLIAM

Man Drowns in Lake Montclair

A 28-year-old Prince William man was found dead in Lake Montclair Wednesday night, the apparent victim of an accidental drowning.

Philip Esposito of Montclair was canoeing with his landlord and her dog when the dog jumped out of the boat, the woman leaned over to retrieve it and the canoe capsized, Prince William County police said.

A search began for the man's body about 3:30 p.m. using sonar scans and police divers. The body was located about 10:30 p.m. and recovered yesterday morning.

There were no indications of foul play, police said, and an investigation is continuing.
