ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 24 -- A day after taking extra batting practice to try to help snap out of slumps, right fielder Nick Markakis, second baseman Brian Roberts and catcher Ramón Hernández were not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

"You're not scoring runs with some of the guys in there that you normally rely on, and I don't think it's wise to keep putting guys to the wall and put them in situations where they're struggling," Manager Dave Trembley said. "I think you've got to give somebody else an opportunity, give guys basically a mental day off and get them back in there tomorrow."

The Orioles had managed just one run in their previous three games. Roberts (1 for 16) and Markakis (17 for 41, 17 strikeouts) have slumped of late while Hernández is hitting .209 this season. Alex Cintrón played second base, Jay Payton started in right field and Guillermo Quiroz caught.

"He's just trying to give me a day off, there's nothing more than that," Markakis said. "It's his decision. I'm okay. I'm perfectly fine."

Trembley on Replay

With Major League Baseball considering experimenting with instant replay in the Arizona Fall League, Trembley said he wouldn't mind seeing replay in the big leagues, though only in limited doses.

He said he would favor reviewing contested home runs. Beyond that, he said he would favor it only if it were limited, such as the challenge system used in the NFL.

Trembley said his major concern with replay are the delays it would cause in games, stoppages that he said can be used as ploys to disrupt a pitcher's rhythm.

"They would have to come up with a plan for how much you can use it, when you can use it, how much time would be allotted before a decision were made," he said.
