Amid economic uncertainty, the size of teacher raises next school year in the region's two largest jurisdictions was settled last week when the Fairfax County School Board adopted its budget and the Montgomery County Council approved annual school funding levels. Here's the teacher salary situation in several local school systems, comparing 2007-08 starting salaries and likely or approved cost-of-living increases for 2008-09.

The District

$42,369, to rise 4.4 percent

Maryland

Calvert County:$42,650, to rise 4.5 percent

Charles County:$42,245, raise to be determined

Howard County:$42,407, to rise 5 percent

Montgomery County:$44,200, to rise 5 percent

Prince George's County:$43,481, raise to be determined

Virginia

Alexandria:$42,671, no change expected

Arlington County:$42,965, to rise 2.2 percent

Fairfax County:$43,911, to rise 2 percent

Loudoun County:$43,065, no cost-of-living raise

Prince William County:$42,354, to rise 1.8 percent
