Go Fish

With the Atlantic Ocean, the Chesapeake Bay and the James River all close by, Virginia Beach is a major saltwater fishing spot.

This Story

· Pier fishing. The Virginia Beach Fishing Pier (757-428-2333) is open from April through October and becomes a 24-hour operation from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Admission is $8. The tackle shop sells bait and offers rod and reel rentals. No fishing license is required.

On the Chesapeake Bay side of the city, a few miles away, is the Lynnhaven Pier (2350 Starfish Rd., 757-481-7071) .

· Charter boat fishing. If you're after the big ones, the Virginia Beach Fishing Center (200 Winston Salem Ave., 800-725-0509) operates a number of boats for deep-sea fishing (tuna, shark, marlin) and for bay angling (rockfish, bluefish, flounder).
