PERSONNEL DEPT.
Four years ago, Rob Mackowiak had the most memorable day of his life. His son, Garrett, was born the morning of May 28, 2004. That afternoon, Mackowiak -- then with the Pirates -- played in a doubleheader against the Cubs. In the first game, he hit a walk-off grand slam. In the second game, he tied the score with a ninth-inning home run. This week, Mackowiak had his son in the Nationals' clubhouse. The kid has a good arm for a 4-year-old. Mackowiak's still searching for his groove; he's batting .149 with one home run.
