BALTIMORE, May 30 -- With three letters -- TBA -- Baltimore Orioles Manager Dave Trembley appeared to hint Friday that pitcher Steve Trachsel's time with the team may be nearing an end. Trembley did not name a starter for Tuesday's game, thereby skipping Trachsel's scheduled turn in the rotation following several sub-par outings.

Trachsel will not pitch from the bullpen. If Trembley does not find a role for Trachsel soon, "we have to reevaluate," Trembley said.

"I don't know anything," Trachsel said. "The saga continues. We're looking for an end."

Trachsel, 37, has endured perhaps the rockiest of his 15-plus major league seasons. He has an 8.82 ERA and a 2-5 record through eight starts, the worst of which came last Saturday against Tampa Bay. Trachsel, after a 14-day layoff, lasted 1 2/3 innings and allowed nine earned runs.

"When you're missing location and you're throwing 84, 85 mph, people are going to whack it," Trembley said. "And that's what happened. I'm not trying to be disrespectful to Steve. He's pitched an awful long time."

With Trachsel's future uncertain, Baltimore needs a starter for Tuesday's game at Minnesota. The Orioles, Trembley said, would have considered Class AAA Norfolk pitcher Hayden Penn, but Penn is on the seven-day disabled list with a shoulder injury.

Roberts Still Has Green Light

Second baseman Brian Roberts has been caught stealing five times this season, tied with B.J. Upton and Carlos Gómez for the most in the American League. Trembley vowed not to dissuade Roberts from running.

"A big part of his game and a big part of what he does for our team here is to steal bases and be aggressive," Trembley said.
