Camp for Grieving Youths

Camp Phoenix, a summer day camp for youths 7 to 15 who are grieving the death of a family member or close friend, has two sessions this summer.

They will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11-13 at King's Landing Park in Huntingtown and Aug. 6-8 at St. John's Youth Center in Lusby.

Stacy Newman, camp director and Calvert Hospice bereavement coordinator, arranged for the second camp after receiving requests from school counselors and families in the southern part of Calvert County.

"We're happy to hold a second camp this summer, which will be more convenient for families located south of Prince Frederick and also accommodate those who live north of Prince Frederick but are unavailable to attend the first session," Newman said.

Camp Phoenix offers youngsters the opportunity to share their feelings of grief and loss in a supportive and understanding environment, Newman said.

The program mixes traditional camp activities, such as swimming, sports, games and crafts, with group discussions and creative projects led by professional counselors and trained volunteers. Participants can have fun and learn coping skills, officials said.

The camp is free to children in Calvert. For information or to register, call 410-535-0892 or 301-855-1226 or visit http://www.calverthospice.org.

The registration deadline for both sessions is June 27.

Stupak organized and supervised invasive-species-mitigation efforts in a 7,120-acre area, DNR officials said in a statement. He developed 29 forest stewardship plans for 700 acres of woodlands. He also trained and supervised staff members on two interagency fire assignments.
