BALTIMORE, May 31 -- Baltimore Orioles first baseman Kevin Millar has had a strained right hamstring for roughly 10 days, he said Saturday. Millar has kept playing, but it may have contributed to him not beating out a close play at first base in the 12th inning Friday night.

"I can mask it as a first baseman, and that's what you do," he said. "I've treated it and stuff and it's gotten better and better. Have I gone full speed on it since I had the strained injury? No. It's more of a choppier stride."

The play in question riled several fans. With runners on first and second with one out, Millar rolled a pitch to shortstop Julio Lugo, who lost the chance at a double play by bobbling the ball. But he still fired to first in time to nab Millar, who seemed to slow as he neared the base.

"I ran down the line the way I've run down the line the last 10 days," he said. "The problem is, when the crowd reacted, I stopped on the base. I didn't shut it down 10 feet before the play was over.

"I'm slow. This isn't an injury issue. This isn't like, 'Did I shut down the play?' I don't shut down plays. I'm a slow runner and I stopped on the base because of the crowd reaction."

Said Manager Dave Trembley: "He just didn't run good. I think he was giving you what he had."

Trembley has tried giving Millar rest. Last week after a game, Trembley told Millar, "Tomorrow I'm going to give you a day off." Millar declined, then socked two home runs the next day.

Trachsel to Bullpen

Trembley moved Steve Trachsel to the bullpen as a long reliever for Saturday night because of the toll Friday's marathon took on the staff. A day earlier, he announced Trachsel would not make his start Tuesday. Matt Albers, who pitched three innings Friday, is a candidate to make that start, Trembley said.
