Get to an ophthalmologist quickly if you see these anomalies. Fast action could save your sight.

This Story

· Floaters that drift in your vision as your eye moves. They may look like dots, veils, cobwebs or strings. Pay particular attention to a sudden increase in dark floaters.

· Flashing lights, especially in peripheral vision. May ripple or flicker.

· A shadow or curtain that comes down across your field of vision.

RESOURCES

· The American Society of Retina Specialists ( http://www.asrs.org) offers a list of board-certified ophthalmologists who have done fellowships in retinal care at recognized institutions. The Web site lists six such specialists in the District, 51 in Maryland and 27 in Virginia.
