BALTIMORE, June 2 -- Baltimore Orioles closer George Sherrill saved his 18th game of the season, though he had to wait a while to do so.

This Story

With the Orioles crashing back to earth, Sherrill's last save opportunity until Monday night against the Boston Red Sox was on May 17. In the interim, he pitched in just four games, none of them save situations. In 2 2/3 innings during that span, Sherrill has allowed just one earned run, which was the game-winner against Tampa on May 25.

Against the Red Sox, Sherrill admitted to feeling "all over the place," yet he managed to escape after two-out walks to Julio Lugo and Kevin Youkilis. Sherrill ended the game by getting Manny Ramírez to fly out to right.

"The last two pitches cut on him," Sherrill said. "He swung over the first one, and the second one just got in on him. It's better to be lucky than good."

Liz Gets Start

Orioles Manager Dave Trembley announced that Radhames Liz will start in Tuesday's opening game at Minnesota. Liz was recalled from Class AAA Norfolk. To make room for him on the roster, the Orioles designated shortstop Luis Hernández for assignment.

If Hernández, 23, clears waivers, the Orioles must decide whether to release him or send him to the minor leagues. Hernández (.241 in 36 games) was replaced as starting shortstop by Freddie Bynum.

Liz, 24, was 1-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 11 starts for the Tides. He was 0-2 with a 6.93 ERA in nine games for Baltimore last season. . . .

Trembley said injured left-handed pitcher Adam Loewen [sore left elbow] may be ready to return to the Orioles by the end of the month. Loewen pitched to live hitters during batting practice at the team's extended spring training in Sarasota, Fla., and is scheduled to pitch one inning in an extended spring training game Thursday.

"We'll let him pitch there until he shows us he's ready," Trembley said. "We'll see what his bounce-back is like. We'll take it one outing at a time with him."

If all goes well, Trembley said Loewen will be sent on a rehab assignment to either Class A Frederick or AA Bowie.
