One day after stating that he planned to wait until the June 30 deadline to opt out of the final season of his contract with the Washington Wizards, Gilbert Are nas looked over his contract on Monday and discovered that it carries a provision stating that he must opt out no later than June 20.
Arenas, who can become an unrestricted free agent once he opts out, does not have an agent and is representing himself. Arenas said he will have a lawyer look over the paperwork needed to make the decision official and plans to submit that paperwork as soon as next week.
Arenas is slated to earn $12.8 million next season but is interested in signing a long-term contract this summer. The free agency period opens July 1. . . .
Tomorrow, the Wizards will hold the first of several workouts for draft prospects at Verizon Center. The Wizards hold the 18th and 47th picks in the June 26 draft.
Prospects scheduled to attend Thursday's workout are C.J. Giles, a center from Oregon State; Lester Hudson, a guard from Tennessee-Martin; Darnell Jackson, a forward from Kansas; Jeremy Par go, a guard from Gonzaga; Mar reese Speights, a forward-center from Florida; and Jason Thompson, a forward from Rider.
The Wizards will host more prospects on Friday and throughout next week. In all, the team will work out between 30 and 40 prospects.
