ROWING: McLean's Sam Stitt and his quadruple sculls teammates and the U.S. women's eight, including Lindsay Shoop of Charlottesville, won gold medals on the final day of the 2008 Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. Stitt, Scott Gault, Jamie Schroeder and Matt Hughes overtook the defending world champions from Poland in the final 250 meters as Germany claimed the bronze medal. The women's eight won gold over Australia and Canada, capping the competition in which the United States won six medals.
SHOOTING: 2004 Olympic gold medalist Matt Emmons of Browns Mills, N.J., earned a bronze medal in the men's 50m prone rifle event at the 2008 ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup in Milan. Emmons, who will represent the United States in Beijing in the prone rifle and 3-position rifle, barely topped his 2008 U.S. Olympic teammate Mike Anti of Winterville, N.C., a three-time Olympian and the 2004 silver medalist in 3-position.
SWIMMING: Two-time U.S. champion Chloe Sutton, who attended elementary school in Ashburn and now resides in Ladera Ranch, Calif., earned an Olympic team spot when she won the 10K Olympic Open Water Test Event this past Saturday in Beijing to qualify for the Olympic 10K race. She finished in 2:00:48.5, topping Baltimore's Kristen Groome, who finished in 2:05:05.5 for 17th place.
WATER POLO: For the first time, a full group of African nations are competing in the seventh edition of the FINA Men's Water Polo World League, a lead-up event to the Olympic tournament that includes a record 19 national teams. Group Africa is composed of Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt. The preliminaries take place until Sunday, when the top eight nations will advance to the Super Final in Genova, Italy, June 16-22.
