MINNEAPOLIS, June 3 -- If he clears waivers, the Baltimore Orioles intend to send Luis Hernández to the minor leagues in hopes that the former starting shortstop rediscovers the ability that had people in the organization convinced he could step in for the departed Miguel Tejada.

"I told Luis if he clears waivers, we're confident he can go back to the minor leagues and play on a regular basis and get himself back to where he was," Manager Dave Trembley said.

Hernández was designated for assignment Monday night to make room for pitcher Radhamés Liz, who was recalled from Class AAA Norfolk to start for Baltimore on Tuesday at Minnesota.

After a shaky spring, Hernández hit .241 in 36 games and struggled to make routine plays. He lost his starting job after a May 7 loss at Oakland, when he failed to start a critical double play. Since Freddie Bynum was recalled from the minors to take over at shortstop, Hernández appeared in only six games.

"In Luis's mind, he thinks he can be an everyday shortstop in the big leagues and that's what you would want," Trembley said. "You want guys to think that. But sometimes you have to take a step backward before you can forward, and that's where he's at right now."

Loewen Will Throw Today

Left-handed pitcher Adam Loewen will throw one inning on Wednesday -- not Thursday as Trembley originally said -- during a start at extended spring training. If all goes well, the pitcher will be sent on a rehab assignment at either Class AA Bowie or Class A Frederick. Loewen has been on the disabled list since April 25 with left elbow soreness.
