TORONTO, June 6 -- The Baltimore Orioles may make a sudden shift in their bullpen before the end of this trip, though the change won't be related to on-field performances. With right-handed reliever Dennis Sarfate and his wife expecting their first child, the pitcher has been given permission to leave the team to witness the birth.

"All the coaches, everyone, has been asking how it's going," Sarfate said. "It's exciting. It's a moment you don't want to miss."

Sarfate said many have told him that firstborns often arrive late, a theory he hopes holds true. After three games in Toronto and an off day Monday, the Orioles travel to Boston for three games.

Still, Sarfate said he's ready to leave for Baltimore at a moment's notice. With 13 pitchers on the active roster, the Orioles could spare an arm in the short term.

"We are hoping for the best and wishing for the best, and we'll get him out of here when the time comes," Manager Dave Trembley said.

5 More Local Players Selected

After selecting a pair of local players the first day of the first-year player draft, the Orioles added to their regional contingent. Baltimore concluded the draft by adding five more local products, headed by 6-foot-6 pitcher Jesse Beal of South County High School in Lorton in the 14th round.

The Orioles also selected Towson outfielder Brian Conley in the 17th round, William & Mary pitcher Patrick Kantakevich in the 22nd, Maryland catcher Charles Durakis in the 37th and Gaithersburg High School pitcher Kevin Brady in the 44th. . . .

Right-handed reliever Randor Bierd, on the disabled list since May with a right shoulder impingement, has started a throwing program at the team's complex in Sarasota, Fla.
