Officials Report Foiling Bomb Plot Near Capital

Pakistan seized three bomb-laden vehicles and arrested three suspects, uncovering a plot for a suspected suicide attack near the capital, Islamabad, just days after an assault on the Danish Embassy, officials said.

Authorities ramped up security near the enclave where most foreign diplomatic missions are located. The U.S. Embassy advised Americans to limit nonessential movement in Islamabad and nearby Rawalpindi.

A police official said the arrested men were Pakistanis and that their targets included a Rawalpindi office of President Pervez Musharraf.

Giant WWII-Era Bomb Destroyed in London

British military engineers used a controlled explosion to safely destroy a giant, rusting World War II-era bomb that was discovered during construction for the 2012 Summer Olympics, the British army said.

The 2,000-pound German bomb, which the Metropolitan Police said was the largest found in London in three decades, was uncovered Monday in east London as construction workers prepared a site for the Games, authorities said.

If the bomb had exploded, it would have created a large crater and sent fragments flying more than half a mile, said Maj. Matt Davies of the army's Royal Engineers. His team destroyed the bomb.
