It is a fine idea for Metro to offer free bus rides on Code Red air-quality days such as yesterday. ["As Temperatures Rise, Residents Seek Relief," front page, June 8].
News organizations are advised by Metro to make announcements of free rides to the public. Unfortunately, however, Metro does not tell its drivers in time for the morning rush. Yesterday morning, I boarded my bus at 7:30 and was told by the driver that I had to pay the full fare. Several minutes later, the driver was informed of the Code Red by phone. I will be able to get a refund, but it is a cumbersome process that will take time.
Metro needs to fine-tune its procedures to make good on its promise of free bus rides on Code Red days.
