Plane Crash Kills Dozens
A Sudan Airways jetliner landed in a thunderstorm and veered off the runway at Khartoum International Airport late Tuesday, bursting into flames and killing dozens, Sudanese officials said.
There were 203 passengers and 14 crew members aboard the Airbus A310, the officials said. The airport's head of medical services said at least 28 were killed.
Sudanese television showed a hellish scene, with flames dwarfing firefighters and towering above the shattered fuselage. Officials differed on whether the storm was the cause of the crash.
The plane took off from Damascus, Syria, then stopped in Amman, Jordan. Because of inclement weather, the aircraft stopped at Port Sudan before heading to Khartoum, an official said. Most of the passengers were believed to be Sudanese.

Calls for a Deal Rejected
Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai rejected calls on Tuesday for a unity government instead of a presidential runoff and said his party was sure to win the June 27 vote against President Robert Mugabe despite government violence.
Tsvangirai said at a news conference that Zimbabwe had suffered a de facto coup and was being run by a military junta. Sixty-six supporters of his Movement for Democratic Change have been killed since the disputed March elections, he said.
A European Union-U.S. summit in Slovenia on Tuesday called on Zimbabwe to end what it called state-sponsored violence and urged U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to send monitors.
10 Pakistani Solders Killed
At least 10 Pakistani soldiers were killed on the Pakistani side of the Afghan border as U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan battled militants infiltrating into Afghanistan, a security official said Wednesday. The soldiers were killed at a border post in the Mohmand tribal region late Tuesday.
"The militants launched a cross-border attack into Afghanistan. At least 10 of our soldiers were killed in a counteroffensive by forces in Afghanistan," said a senior Pakistani security official. He did not say if the forces battling militants on the Afghan side were from NATO or a separate U.S. command.
3 Palestinians Die in Airstrike
An Israeli airstrike killed three Palestinians firing mortars at southern Israel, while Israel's leaders debated whether to pursue a truce with the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip or launch a broad military offensive. Early Wednesday, Palestinian officials said a 6-year-old girl was killed by Israeli tank fire in Gaza. The Israeli military said soldiers opened fire at militants launching rockets into Israel.
Islamist Condemns Somali Pact
A leader of Somalia's ousted Islamist movement rejected a U.N.-brokered peace deal between the government and an opposition alliance as "rubbish," saying the Islamic insurgents will fight on.
