The Washington Post Co. named Hal S. Jones to succeed John B. "Jay" Morse Jr. as chief financial officer, the company said yesterday.

Jones, 55, is a top executive at Kaplan, the education company that is owned by The Post Co. and is its biggest revenue generator. Jones, who has spent nearly 19 years at The Post Co. and Kaplan, will take over when Morse takes early retirement at the end of the year.

The Post Co. also promoted Controller Wallace R. Cooney, 45, to chief accounting officer, effective immediately.

"In his role as controller of the company, Wally has demonstrated a superb understanding of the complex technical accounting issues that we, like all other companies, are dealing with," Post Co. Chairman Donald E. Graham said in a statement.

Replacing Jones as chief executive of Kaplan Professional -- the company division that sells training to people already in the workforce, such as CPA exam prep -- will be Jim Rosenthal, formerly head of television and consumer products at New Line Cinema, the movie studio owned by Time Warner

To save costs and streamline movie production, Time Warner merged New Line into the larger Warner Bros. movie and television studios earlier this year.
