Prison Escapees Hunted

U.S. and NATO troops aided Afghan forces with reconnaissance in a hunt Saturday for 870 inmates who escaped prison after a sophisticated Taliban assault Friday.

A roadside bomb, meanwhile, killed four Marines sent to southwestern Afghanistan to help train the country's fledgling police force.

Mugabe Foe in Court

Police brought the Zimbabwe opposition's No. 2 leader to court Saturday, the first time he has been seen in public since plainclothes officers hustled him off a plane Thursday.

Police have said that Tendai Biti, secretary general of the Movement for Democratic Change, will be charged with treason, which can carry the death penalty.

Biti's arrest has fueled concerns about the runoff scheduled for June 27 between opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and President Robert Mugabe.

Eastern Town Is Attacked

Rebels in Chad attacked the eastern town of Goz-Beida on Saturday, and Irish E.U. troops took up defensive positions between the fighting and a refugee camp, aid workers and an officer said.

A rebel alliance fighting to topple President Idriss Déby has said several of its columns are advancing westward toward the capital, N'Djamena, in a fresh offensive. They last attacked the capital in February.

Hamas Says Blast Was Accidental

Hamas's military wing said Friday that an explosion that killed eight Palestinians in Gaza on Thursday was an accident that occurred as militants prepared to carry out a bomb attack. Hamas initially blamed the explosion on an Israeli airstrike, but the Israeli military denied involvement.

Pakistan Demurs on Judges

Pakistan's main ruling party said it would reinstate judges ousted by President Pervez Musharraf only after it has overcome legal obstacles, following a massive rally calling for their restoration. Lawyers staged the protest because the 11-week-old ruling coalition has failed to quickly reinstate the justices as promised.

Argentine Farmers Call New Strike

Argentine farm leaders said late Saturday they will stage their fourth strike since mid-March starting at midnight to press the government to negotiate a solution to the standoff.
