Desmond Dunham, one of the winningest coaches in the area, has resigned as head coach of the boys' and girls' cross-country and track and field teams at Eleanor Roosevelt High School and has accepted a position as a volunteer assistant with the men's track team at the University of Maryland.
"After weighing this decision heavily and reflecting on my personal and professional goals, as well as my family obligations, I realize that it is time for me to step down and pass the torch to the remaining coaching staff," Dunham, 35, said in an e-mail.
Eleanor Roosevelt Athletic Director Andrew Capece could not be reached to comment.
In five years, Dunham led Eleanor Roosevelt to 12 girls' state championships (three in cross-country and nine combined in indoor and outdoor track) and one boys' outdoor track championship. He also guided his track teams to eight Nike Indoor Nationals titles, five Nike Outdoor Nationals titles, three Penn Relays championships and two national records.
"I am extremely confident that the program will continue to thrive and serve as an example to high school sports teams across the country," Dunham said. "The remaining coaching staff is qualified and dedicated, and I feel assured that our tradition will never die."
