Where to Go, What to Know

Travel staffer Christina Talcott recently crossed the Bay Bridge to sample breakfast spots. Here's her reporter's notebook:

About 40 minutes from the Beltway.

From $1.75 for a cup of joe to $11 for a frittata.

Take Route 50 east toward Annapolis. Before the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge, you have to pay a toll of $2.50. Stevensville is the first town at the far end of the bridge, and Grasonville is about four miles farther east, just past Kent Narrows.

Just Plain Joe Coffee Co. (Kent Landing, Stevensville, 410-829-0843) serves breakfast and lunch and makes coffee drinks to order with fresh-roasted beans. From Route 50 east, take Exit 37 to Romancoke Road and go south. Make the first left on Thompson Creek Service Road, then the second right onto Kent Landing Road and into the Kmart parking lot.

The unassuming Kent Island Depot (320 Romancoke Rd., Stevensville, 410-604-3000) brews Just Plain Joe coffee, sells divine pastries and luxury foodstuffs and has a hot breakfast bar for $5.99 a pound. There are a few tables inside the store and a picnic table outside. From 50 east, take Exit 37 to Romancoke Road and go south; turn into the BP station just after the Bay Bridge Airport.

Overlooking the water at Kent Narrows, Harris Crab House (433 Kent Narrows Way, North Grasonville, 410-827-9500) serves breakfast classics, including creamed chipped beef over a biscuit ($6) and sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches ($3.50), but it's the seafood breakfast dishes -- including the shrimp and crab hash ($11) -- that make it a worthy stop after the bridge. From 50 east, take Exit 42 to Route 18, turn right and go to Kent Narrows Road. Make a right, cross under Route 50, then turn left onto Kent Narrows Way.

An Eastern Shore fixture since 1955, Holly's (Jackson Creek Rd., Grasonville, 410-827-8711) serves unmatched fried chicken, and its breakfasts are fast, rich, filling and cheap. From 50 east, take Exit 43B and turn left on Chester River Beach Road. Cross over Route 50, then make the second left onto Saddler Road (Route 835) and follow it to Holly's at Jackson Creek Road.
