Motorcyclists Killed in D.C., Montgomery

Two motorcyclists were killed yesterday in separate crashes, one in the District and one in Montgomery County, authorities said. Theirs were the fifth and sixth motorcycle fatalities in the region in the past four weeks.

In the first of yesterday's incidents, a man was riding a motorcycle southbound on Georgia Avenue in Montgomery about 2 p.m. when a car traveling in the opposite direction attempted to make a left turn at Heathfield Road, county police said. A collision occurred and the motorcyclist died at the scene, police said.

The second incident occurred in Southeast Washington, near the Washington Navy Yard, D.C. police said.

A motorcycle was headed west on M Street SE about 6:30 p.m. when a car traveling south on Seventh Street began to turn onto M Street.

The car and motorcycle collided, and the motorcyclist was fatally injured, police said. He was taken to the Washington Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead. The man was not immediately identified, but police said he was about 30 years old.

The series of motorcycle-related fatalities in the area began May 26 when a military policeman on a borrowed sports bike swerved off the George Washington Memorial Parkway and tumbled down a steep embankment.

Last Sunday, two brothers from Landover died in crashes at a highway exit ramp in Baltimore. At one point on Interstate 95, they were clocked at almost 100 mph, authorities said.

On Thursday, a 20-year-old woman from Southeast Washington was killed when the motorcycle on which she was riding crashed into an oncoming vehicle.
