George Washington is expected to name Mike Bozeman its new women's basketball coach at a news conference this afternoon, a source close to the hiring said yesterday.

Bozeman, 41, has been an assistant coach at GW for three seasons.

Though he has no collegiate head coaching experience, he served as interim coach in 2006 when Coach Joe McKeown injured his knee and led the Colonials to an upset victory over eighth-ranked Georgia.

Before coming to GW in 2005, Bozeman spent six seasons as the girls' basketball coach at Bishop McNamara High School. Bozeman took over a moribund program and led the Mustangs to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference final twice, winning the title in 2003.

McNamara won 56 consecutive games from 2002 to '04 and earned the No. 1 ranking in the country in 2004, the first area boys' or girls' team to be ranked first in the country by USA Today since the DeMatha boys in 1984. Bozeman's record at the Forestville school was 151-35.

A graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson, Bozeman is a Washington native. He is not the first in his family to become a college basketball coach. His older brother, Todd Bozeman, began his coaching career at the University of California and now coaches at Morgan State. Bozeman faces a tall task in replacing McKeown, who left GW after 19 seasons for Northwestern earlier this month.

During McKeown's tenure in Foggy Bottom, the Colonials were a perennial top 25 women's basketball program. They earned 15 NCAA tournament berths, including a trip to the region final in 1997, and were frequently ranked in the top 25. GW went 27-7 and advanced to the NCAA tournament region semifinals last season.
