HIGH-FLYING SPRINGS

When Burke's Justin Spring learned Sunday that he made the gymnastics team, he felt out of this world. Twenty-three years ago, his father really was.

A NASA astronaut in the 1980s, Sherwood "Woody" Spring spent six days in space in 1985. A crew member on the shuttle Atlantis, he took part in two spacewalks that lasted more than 12 hours.

His son, as assistant gymnastics coach at the University of Illinois, clinched one of six available spots at the conclusion of the Olympic trials in Philadelphia. Though he is best known for his mastery of the high and parallel bars, Justin Spring, 24, will never quite fly as high as his dad.

TO TRAIN IN MARYLAND

The whitewater team scheduled a week of pre-Olympic training on the super high-tech, man-made course at the $24-million Adventure Sports Center International in the mountains near McHenry, Md., from July 13 to 20. The center, which is open to the public and about three hours from the District, features push-button, on-demand waves and rapids on its crescent-shaped, 1,700-foot course.

CHINESE FIREPOWER

China has stationed a battery of ground-to-air missiles just 300 yards from an Olympic venue, the latest sign of tightening security with the games just 6 1/2 weeks away. The fenced-off military compound has been set up just south of the Olympic Sports Center Stadium, a venue for soccer and modern pentathlon. At least two Hongqi 7 missile launchers were visible behind a seven-foot fence, with military hardware and vehicles hidden under camouflage netting.
