Fahey May Get the Call At Shortstop

CHICAGO, June 24 -- If the Baltimore Orioles stay in-house in their search for another shortstop, Brandon Fahey will likely be the choice to be recalled from Class AAA Norfolk. Manager Dave Trembley said Tuesday that a move probably won't be made until after the three-game series with the Chicago Cubs.

Trembley said utility player Oscar Salazar would likely be sent down to make room. However, with the Cubs starting lefties in the first two games, the right-handed hitting Salazar has current value.

"To be perfectly honest with you, I want ed to keep Salazar," Trembley said. "They are starting two lefties against us and then I think after that, we might do something. That's fair, that's honest."

Fahey began the season with the Orioles and is hitting .280 with a homer and 20 RBI at Norfolk. Meanwhile, former starter Luis Hernández has hit .190 in 12 games since being demoted, making him an unlikely candidate for a return.

The manager has ruled out having anybody on the current roster play the position.

Said Trembley, "I think it's a little far-fetched to think that I'm going to put Melvin [Mora] over there."

A Little Verbal Jab

Since spring training, Kevin Millar and Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster have held a playful war of words, the one-time Florida Marlins teammates trying to one-up each other. But a change in the Cubs rotation forced Dempster to miss facing the Orioles.

That didn't stop Millar from taking one more playful jab.

"I'm sure he'll be on the top step" of the dugout, Millar said. "What I'm going to try to do my first day is hit a ball into the dugout. I'm going to try to pull something extremely hard into their dugout, make him and Lou Piniella scatter."
