Retired Tigers star Gates Brown, speaking about the race riots in Detroit the year before the team's World Series triumph. The '68 Tigers were honored in a pregame ceremony last night at Comerica Park.

Rangers: OF Josh Hamilton left last night's game against the Astros because of left knee inflammation. He is listed as day-to-day.

Rays: Recalled IF Ben Zobrist from Class AAA Durham. He fills the roster spot opened when OF Justin Ruggiano was optioned to Durham on Sunday.

Royals: Claimed RHP Robinson Tejeda off waivers from the Rangers. Moved LHP John Bale (broken hand) to the 60-day disabled list.

Tigers: Activated OF Gary Sheffield from the disabled list and sent 1B Jeff Larish to Class AAA Toledo.

Yankees: Purchased the contract of OF Justin Christian from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and started him in left field in Pittsburgh last night. OF Johnny Damon is day-to-day with a sore arch. OF Hideki Matsui has been bothered lately by a sore knee and can't be used as a DH because the Yankees are in an NL park. New York also optioned LHP Billy Traber to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
