C Jesús Flores was lifted into the No. 4 batting spot for the first time all season. He's the sixth player Washington has used as its cleanup hitter this season. . . . Class A Potomac 1B Chris Marrero, Washington's 2006 first-round pick, underwent surgery yesterday to repair a fractured right ankle. The injury, which happened last week, will force him to miss the rest of the season. He is expected to be healed by spring training.

QUOTABLE

"I was looking at the stats. The guy who leads our team in RBIs is Lastings Milledge, but [Flores has one fewer] RBI than he does in [162] fewer at-bats. For all the losses we take, those things sometimes ease the pain."

Manager Manny Acta, on Flores
