CHICAGO, June 25 -- Left fielder Luke Scott has been in the starting lineup against four of the past six left-handers to start against the Baltimore Orioles -- including Wednesday night's game against Chicago Cubs lefty Ted Lilly -- after seeing only three of the first 15 southpaw starters to oppose the Orioles this season.

The left-handed-hitting Scott entered play hitting just .220 against lefties this season. But recently he is 6 for 14 with a double, triple and home run after getting two singles in three at-bats against Lilly on Wednesday night.

"With anything in life, if you don't have much experience at it, it's kind of hard," Scott said. "The more you do something, the better you're going to get at it. The more I face lefties, the better I'm going to get hitting them."

Scott said he has focused on several important adjustments, changes that have become easier to implement with more exposure to lefties.

"It's a different swing path you've got to take, different timing," Scott said.

Loewen Decision Is Near

The Orioles are nearing a decision on left-hander Adam Loewen, who has progressed to the homestretch of his planned rehab stint without incident. After pitching on Tuesday at Class AA Bowie, Loewen made another appearance Wednesday night. In the second game of the only planned back-to-back appearances of his rehab, he pitched a scoreless inning, striking out one.

"It will be interesting not so much to get the line -- how many innings, how many pitches, things like that. I would be interested when he goes to the ballpark to see how he feels," Manager Dave Trembley said. "That will be more of an indicator where he's at." . . .

Right-handed reliever Randor Bierd (shoulder) will begin a rehab stint with Class A Frederick on Thursday. He has been on the disabled list since May 2. . . . Shortstop Freddie Bynum cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Class AAA Norfolk.
