Indiana University Athletic Director Rick Greenspan will resign at the end of the year amid new NCAA allegations that the school failed to monitor the men's basketball team.
The NCAA initially alleged that former basketball coach Kelvin Sampson committed five major recruiting violations in his 1 1/2 years at the school but dropped one of the charges before school officials testified in front of the NCAA infractions committee. Indiana is awaiting a decision on penalties from the NCAA. . . .
St. John's (D.C.) center Sydney Wilson, a 6-foot-6 rising senior, has committed to play for Georgetown, Cadets Coach Jonathan Scribner said. Wilson averaged a team-leading 11 points per game as a junior.
· SOCCER: The Iraqi Football Association said it has dissolved the national soccer team and dismissed Coach Adnan Hamad four days after the team's loss to Qatar ended the country's hopes of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
Tareq Ahmed, a senior federation official, said a new coach would choose players for a new national team. The statement did not rule out the possibility of current players making the new roster. . . .
Roberto Donadoni was fired as Italy's coach. The decision by the Italian Football Federation came after a meeting between Donadoni and federation President Giancarlo Abete, four days after Italy was knocked out of the European Championship quarterfinals by Spain on penalty kicks. . . .
In MLS, Kenny Cooper scored in the 62nd minute to help FC Dallas tie the host Houston Dynamo, 1-1. Brian Ching had a first-half goal for Houston.
· COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Prized University of Minnesota recruit Sam Maresh underwent open-heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Doctors deemed the procedure, which replaced a valve in Maresh's heart, a success.
· HOCKEY: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Scott Niedermayer will play out the final year of his four-year, $6.75 million contract. Last season, the 34-year-old Niedermayer didn't return until December. . . .
Martin Straka has decided to return to his Czech club. Straka, who played for the New York Rangers the past three seasons after joining the NHL in 1992, will be a player and sports director for HC Lasselsberger Plzen.
· WRESTLING: Lightweight prospect Anthony Peterson, a Washington native, easily outpointed Fernando Trejo, maintaining his perfect record (27-0) in a dull unanimous decision in Las Vegas.
