CHICAGO, June 26 -- Even before he could return to Baltimore for further examination, Orioles right-hander Matt Albers was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. The Orioles replaced him in the bullpen by activating right-handed reliever Fernando Cabrera from the DL.

"Albers is going to get an MRI tomorrow, so that's all I know right now," Orioles Manager Dave Trembley said. "But I would say that he's going to miss some time."

Albers, who stepped in as an emergency starter Wednesday because Brian Burres was too ill to pitch, left the game against the Chicago Cubs with shoulder discomfort after facing just the first five hitters. Albers declined to comment on Thursday.

With Albers unavailable, the Orioles added Cabrera to provide depth to a bullpen that has been forced to take on extra innings because the team's starters have struggled this month.

Cabrera, who underwent elbow surgery in the offseason, was activated after finishing his rehabilitation stint. He had a 12.60 ERA in nine games with the Orioles last season.

"This year, I decided to have surgery," Cabrera said. "Then they found some stuff in my elbow. So now I feel a lot better. It does make a big difference. For me the difference is mentally when you're pain free."

Wieters Set to Move Up

Catcher Matt Wieters will likely be promoted to Class AA Bowie today after dominating in his first-half stint at Class A Frederick, his first stop in the Orioles' minor league chain after being selected in the first round of last year's draft.

Wieters was hitting .342 with 14 homers and 38 RBI with the Keys. . . .

Burres felt well enough Thursday to pitch one inning in relief of Orioles starter Radhamés Liz. Burres allowed one run on three hits, and Even with his relief appearance, Burres will remain on schedule to take his next turn in the rotation on Monday against Kansas City.

"I feel 10 times better today," Burres said before the game. "It was just one of those stomach things that you need to clear out and go back to playing when you feel better."
