W.T. Woodson has hired All-Met Coach of the Year Warren Williams as its girls' soccer coach.
Williams, who posted a 113-38-12 record in nine seasons at Centreville, lifted the Wildcats to the Virginia AAA Northern Region tournament's final four this spring even though they won only four regular season games.
Williams, who replaces three-year coach Sharon Andrulot, won five district titles and two region titles and earned four state tournament berths in his tenure at Centreville.
W.T. Woodson is "closer to home," said Williams, who lives in Annandale. "It's a quality of life issue for me. I love the kids at Centreville, the administration, the parents."
W.T. Woodson posted a 12-3-2 record this spring, with two of its three losses to top-ranked state champion Robinson. The Cavaliers lose four seniors from that team and return their top goal-scorers: Liberty District player of the year and All-Met Niki Mercier (12 goals) and Lindsey Ottavio (18 goals).
"His experience is and his résumé is impeccable," W.T. Woodson Athletic Director Dan Checkosky said. "He's leaving a great program and so I feel that he also wants to be part of a great program."
Vinson Invited to USA Basketball Trials
Montrose Christian All-Met forward Terrell Vinson will represent the area next week at the USA Basketball under-18 trials, which run Tuesday through July 10 at Verizon Center and McDonough Arena. Vinson and teammate Isaiah Armwood both were invited to the event, making Montrose one of only two high school schools with multiple invitees (Mater Dei of Santa Ana, Calif., is the other).
Armwood opted out of the trials to concentrate on summer school classes, Montrose Coach Stu Vetter said.
"It's an honor to be asked to try out," Vetter said. "I know it's a difficult decision for him, because anytime you get an opportunity to represent your country it's an opportunity that doesn't come along very often."
Vetter said Armwood has whittled down his college choices to Villanova, Texas and Syracuse. Vinson is down to Maryland, Georgetown, Duke and Villanova.
Georgetown Coach John Thompson III is an assistant coach for the U.S. team, which is being headed by Davidson Coach Bob McKillop.
