Justice for Dogs, formerly known as the Maryland Alliance of Dogs Deserve Better, needs volunteers to assist with telephone calls, mailings, meetings and research to help get legislation passed to improve the quality of life for tethered, chained and penned dogs. St. Mary's County Historical Society is looking for volunteers to help in the office, library, archives, bookstore, Old Jail Museum and gardens, as well as with lectures, school programs and special events. Center for Children, an outpatient mental health clinic for children and adults, needs mentors 21 and older for children 4-18 with a parent in prison, on probation or on parole. The center is seeking minority men to be mentors. The program helps children with emotional support, academics, life skills and character development. Call Sharon Groves at 301-753-4002, Ext. 130.

· The center's supervised visitation program needs volunteers to monitor court-ordered visits between noncustodial parents and their children. A background check is conducted, and training is provided. Call Ann Seely at 301-753-4002, Ext. 129.

St. Mary's Animal Welfare League needs foster homes, board members and volunteers to help with socializing animals, publicity, fundraisers and adoption events. 301-373-5659.

Three Oaks Center, a shelter for homeless men, needs volunteer monitors 8 a.m.-noon or noon-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one shift a month at the Lexington Park shelter. Training is provided. Call Ruben Berry at 301-863-9535.
