Congressional Country Club's board of directors has recommended to the club's members that Tiger Woods's signature golf tournament be played at the Bethesda course through 2017.

The club, which already is scheduled to host the tournament this year and next, will hold a meeting of the entire membership July 29 to discuss the issue, with the members then voting on the proposal. The votes will be tallied Aug. 19.

Congressional members have twice overwhelmingly approved hosting the tournament, first for the inaugural event in 2007 and in 2008, and then for a one-year extension through 2009. The tournament will not be played at Congressional in 2010 and 2011 because the club will be renovating its greens in 2010 in preparation for hosting the 2011 U.S. Open.

Woods and his foundation have been looking at courses in the Washington area and in several nearby cities as possible replacements for those two years, but no decisions have been reached. Aronimink Golf Club in the Philadelphia suburbs is considered among the leading possibilities.

Under terms of the contract, Congressional reportedly can earn about $1.5 million every year it hosts Woods's tournament. The board's proposal calls for an initial three-year deal from 2012 to 2014, with an option for three more years through 2017.

Woods has said he would like to make Congressional the permanent home for his tournament, the AT&T National.

This first round of this year's four-day tournament is Thursday.
