Police confirmed yesterday that Baltimore Ravens cornerback Derrick Martin was cited on a charge of drug abuse after they say he was found in possession of suspected marijuana at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
Airport screeners discovered three small packets of suspected marijuana while searching Martin at a security checkpoint on Saturday, police said. He was issued a ticket and will be sent a summons to appear in Cleveland Municipal Court on July 15, Stacho said. The maximum penalty for misdemeanor drug abuse is a $150 fine.
Martin, 23, was a sixth-round draft pick in 2006. . . .
New England Patriots defensive back Willie Andrews was held without bail after allegedly pointing a handgun at his girlfriend's head.
Andrews was arrested yesterday following the alleged incident that occurred at about 1 a.m. after he returned home and had an argument with his girlfriend.
Andrews, a backup since being drafted by the Patriots in the last round in 2006, was charged with illegal possession of a large capacity firearm and assault with a dangerous weapon and was being held without bail pending the results of a hearing on Thursday.
In February, Andrews was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and driving an unregistered motor vehicle.
· GOLF: Two-time Masters champion José Maria Olazábal failed to qualify for the British Open when he took bogey on the third hole of a playoff in Sunningdale, England.
Darren Clarke, returning after the death of his wife two years ago, also failed to earn a spot at Royal Birkdale in the 36-hole qualifier for European Tour players.
· COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Georgia Tech redshirt freshman cornerback Jerrard Tarrant has been charged with rape and has been suspended from the team.
The alleged victim said she was raped at an on-campus dormitory April 25. Tarrant, 19, was released on Saturday on $40,000 bail. . . .
Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks, 66, avoided injury when a boat he was on capsized on the McKenzie River near Springfield, Ore. The Register-Guard of Eugene reported the boat overturned after a strong current pushed it into a log. Brooks, who coached at Oregon from 1977 to '94, swam to a gravel bar after falling into the water.
· SOCCER: U.S. forward Josh Wolff returned to Major League Soccer after 1 1/2 seasons in Germany, agreeing to a four-year contract with the Kansas City Wizards.
Wolff, 31, left the Wizards in December 2006 to sign with 1860 Munich in the German second division. The two-time MLS all-star has nine goals in 59 games with the U.S. national team, including the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
· COLLEGES: First-team All-Met girls' basketball player Tarik Hislop of Paint Branch verbally committed to James Madison University. Hislop, the 2008 Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year, is a rising senior guard who led the unbeaten Panthers to the Maryland 3A championship last season. She averaged 21.2 points and 7.4 rebounds.
