"The main idea was to work closely with the guys and staff and keep the integrity of the 'Car Talk' humor," Grossman said.

"As the Wrench Turns" might not depart much from the brothers' well-maintained rep, but this is a change of direction for PBS. The network home of animated kid favorites "Arthur" and "Cyberchase" isn't known for airing animated series in prime time, especially for grown-ups. PBS plans to air 10 new half-hour episodes in pairs over a five-week run.

"One thing we want to note here is that while we're fans of something like 'Family Guy,' this isn't "Family Guy,'" Grossman said, referring to the popular Fox series. "There's a lot of underlying reality to the writing. Lots of layers. It's a sophisticated show, which I think makes it fit in well with PBS."
