An injury and two returns have significantly altered the Dodgers' starting lineup in recent days, and back surgery could keep their shortstop out for at least eight more weeks.
Rafael Furcal was set to have surgery yesterday to relieve pressure on a disk in his lower back.
Furcal left a rehab assignment with the team's Class AAA affiliate in Las Vegas on Tuesday after experiencing discomfort in his back. He has been on the disabled list since May 6.
2B Jeff Kent left yesterday's game in Houston with stiffness in his back. Manager Joe Torre said the injury wasn't serious.
IF Nomar Garciaparra and OF Andruw Jones will join the Dodgers today in San Francisco.
Garciaparra has been on the disabled list since April 26 with a strained left calf. Jones has been on the DL since May 25 with a right knee injury.
· CASTILLO TO DL: The Mets placed 2B Luis Castillo on the 15-day-disabled list because of a strained hip flexor.
Castillo did not start the previous two games. He is in the first year of a $25 million, four-year contract and has had trouble recovering from arthroscopic surgery on both knees in the offseason.
He was batting .261 in 68 games with three home runs and 26 RBI.
· A YEAR LATER: The Phillies will call up LHP J.A. Happ to pitch against Johan Santana and the Mets. Happ will be recalled from Class AAA Lehigh Valley for the start today in Philadelphia.
Happ, 25, will be making his second major league start, both against the Mets. He gave up seven hits, including three homers, and five runs in four innings of an 8-3 loss in Philadelphia on June 30, 2007.
