Stafford County Deputy Sheriff Jason E. Mooney died in a car crash while responding to an accident on Interstate 95.
Howard County police officer Scott A. Wheeler died after being struck by a car he was attempting to flag down for speeding.
Montgomery County police officer Luke T. Hoffman died a day after he was struck by a police car while chasing a suspect on foot.
D.C. police officer Wayne C. Pitt died after being dragged by his patrol car when it accidentally slipped into gear.
2006
Fairfax County police officer Vicky O. Armel was killed during an attack on the Sully District station by a mentally ill teenage gunman. Officer Michael E. Garbarino died of his wounds from the same attack nine days later.
D.C. police officer Gerard W. Burke Jr. died from a ruptured aorta while pursuing a suspected stolen car.
Corrections officer David W. McGuinn was stabbed to death by two prisoners in the maximum-security Maryland House of Correction.
2005
D.C. police officer James C. McBride died as a result of drinking too much water after participating in a bicycle patrol training program.
Prince George's County police officer Steven F. Gaughan was fatally shot when he pursued a suspect into a Laurel area apartment complex after a traffic stop.
Volunteer D.C. police officer Joseph Pozell died after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at an intersection in Georgetown.
2004
Maryland Transportation Authority police officer Duke G. Aaron III died when his cruiser was struck from behind near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
D.C. police officer John S. Ashley had a fatal heart attack while chasing a dog that had escaped from its owner in Georgetown.
Maryland State Trooper Anthony Jones was struck and killed by a drunk driver while he was clearing debris from Route 50 in Bowie.
2003
Prince George's police officer Anthony Michael Walker died of injuries sustained in a car accident that occurred while he was on patrol on Brandywine Road.
Montgomery County police policy and planning director Joseph A. Mattingly Jr. was killed when his car crashed into a tree in Bethesda while he drove to the scene of a crime.
