BALTIMORE, July 4 -- When games are close late, Baltimore Orioles Manager Dave Trembley said he is still inclined to pull left fielder Luke Scott for a defensive replacement. But Trembley said he's seen improvement in Scott, who arrived with a reputation as a below-average defender.
"I think he's better than what was advertised," Trembley said.
John Shelby, who coaches the outfielders, said Scott has been diligent about improving his defense and has been a victim of comparisons with speedy teammates Adam Jones and Nick Markakis.
"I think a lot of times people get into comparing him with how Jones and Markakis play in the outfield," Shelby said. "But I think when you look at Luke overall, he's a pretty solid outfielder. He just doesn't stand out."
Scott, who has no errors in 58 games in left, said he has been given a bad rap defensively.
"I may not be the fastest guy, but positioning is big, I feel," Scott said. "More times than not, I'm in the right position to make a play."
Ray Hopes to Return This Year
Closer Chris Ray, who is recovering from elbow ligament replacement surgery, still hopes to return before the season is out. But Trembley said Friday that next season may be more realistic. Ray is pitching in simulated games and is progressing through a throwing program.
"My expectation is to take a conservative course of action," Trembley said. "And if he were to join the club before this season was over, that's a bonus. But I'm not particularly counting on that." . . .
Second baseman Brian Roberts was a last-minute scratch Friday because of illness. Freddie Bynum took his spot in lineup; Brandon Fahey moved from shortstop to second base.
