Washington Capitals restricted free agents Brooks Laich and Shaone Morrisonn have filed for salary arbitration. If the players do not agree to a contract extension with the Capitals in the next two weeks, their salaries next season will be decided by a third party.

By filing for arbitration, Laich, a forward who scored a career-high 21 goals last season, and Morrisonn, a defenseman who averaged more than 20 minutes of ice time per game, are no longer eligible to sign offer sheets from other clubs.

Arbitration cases will be heard from July 20 to Aug. 4; the deadline for decisions is Aug. 6.

This is the second consecutive summer that Laich has filed for arbitration. He won his case last July and was awarded a $725,000 contract.

Forward Boyd Gordon did not file for arbitration, while forward Eric Fehr is expected to sign his qualifying offer. Gordon and Fehr are also restricted free agents.

· PRO BASKETBALL: Michael Beasley resumed contact drills with the Miami Heat summer league team, his first regular basketball activity since slightly cracking his sternum three days earlier.

His status for tomorrow's summer-league opener in Orlando against the Chicago Bulls -- and Derrick Rose, who went No. 1 overall in the June 26 draft, one spot ahead of Beasley -- remains listed as day-to-day.

Beasley was struck by a teammate's elbow in a defensive drill Wednesday, causing the injury. The former Kansas State star, who averaged 26.2 points and 12.4 rebounds in his lone college season, had only participated in non-contact work since.

· COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Louisville wide receiver Trent Guy was shot in the back early yesterday outside garage near a downtown nightclub. The school said it expects him to recover.

The 20-year-old junior was taken to University Hospital, where he was in stable condition after surgery, athletic department spokesman Rocco Gasparro said.
