Bertha Makes Leap To Hurricane Status
· Bertha is the first Atlantic Ocean storm to reach hurricane status this summer and is growing stronger as it moves across the warm waters of the central tropical Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center said yesterday.
Bertha formed off the coast of Africa and began moving west a few days ago. It was unclear exactly where Bertha would go, but forecasters were projecting a track yesterday that could take it toward the island of Bermuda.
The hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30. One storm reached tropical storm status, and experts predict a busy storm season. Tropical storms are designated hurricanes when their top winds reach 74 mph. The worst hurricanes, Category 5, have winds of at least 156 mph.
Arenas Says He Will Stay for Less Money
· Gilbert Arenas, the Washington Wizards' all-star guard, has agreed to stay with the team. He was offered nearly $127 million but took $111 million so the team could use the extra money to sign other players.
